Yan'an, Mecca of the Chinese Revolution

Yan'an is among the first batch of National Historical and Cultural Cities. "Three Yellow, One Mecca" (the mausoleum and temples of the Yellow Emperor, the Hukou Waterfall of the Yellow River, customs and culture of loess, Mecca of the Chinese Revolution) enjoys great prestige both at home and abroad.

The central authority of the Chinese Communist Party and major leaders led by Mao Zedong conducted the Anti-Japanese War and the Liberation War in Yan'an where 445 revolutionary memorial sites are located.

Famous scenic spots in Yan'an include the Mausoleum of the Yellow Emperor, the Pagoda Mountain, the Hukou Waterfall of the Yellow River, Zaoyuan Revolutionary Site and Yan'an Revolutionary Memorial.

The folk culture of Yan'an features the rough and bold Yan'an waist drum, loud and emotional folk songs of northern Shaanxi, primitive but exquisite folk paper-cutting and enthusiastic and joyful Yangko of northern Shaanxi.

Being one of Yan'an Waist Drums, the Ansai Waist Drum is known as Drum of the World. Ansai District of Yan'an was named as the Hometown of Chinese Waist Drums by China's Ministry of Culture in 1996. The traditional folk art Ansai paper-cutting is esthetically pleasant, elaborately cut, culturally rich and is renowned as "the Cultural Relic on the Ground" and culturally "Living Fossil".

Ansai Waist Drum and Ansai Paper-cutting was listed among the first batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage authorized by China's State Council.

Tourism Information: 

Yan'an Ershilipu Airport has opened domestic direct flights to five cities including Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai, Chongqing, Guangzhou with over 50 inbound and outbound flights.

Nearly 30 trains reach cities including Xi'an, Shanghai, Tianjin and Beijing. It only takes two hours and 15 minutes from Yan'an to Xi'an by bullet train.
