Enjoying the Ansai Waist Drum Performance in the Scenic Park of Operation for Safeguarding Yan’an

The Scenic Park of Operation for Safeguarding Yan’an is located in Baota District in Yan’an City, Shaanxi Province, in the vicinity of the former site of the Zaoyuan Revolution. As a Red Tourism Spot offering classic performances, the Park uses a realistic approach to revive the year 1947 in the real Yan’an when the people and militias in Yan’an lured the enemy into the deep and fought to defend Yan’an under the leadership of the CCP and Chairman Mao.

The Park emphasizes the interaction between the cast and the audience. The scene for the celebration of victory in the last part of the performance combines the northern Shaanxi folk song Xintianyou, the passionate yangko dance endorsing the CCP armies and the bold and energetic Ansai Waist Drum to showcase the folk-custom and culture of this holy city of Chinese Revolution.

Ansai Waist Drum is a traditional folk dance of Shaanxi Province, in which several or even a thousand people can participate simultaneously. The tremendous vigor and the exquisite performance are so enchanting that it is given the name of the Finest Drum in the World. The Ansai District of Yan’an was named the Hometown of Waist Drum by the Ministry of Culture in 1996.

In 2016, Ansai Waist Drum was included in the First Batch of State-level Intangible Cultural Heritage.
