Fengxiang: No. 1 Village for Clay Sculpting in China

Located in Fengxiang County, Baoji City, Liuying Village is renowned as the “No. 1 Village for Clay Sculpting in China”. This folk village has come to the limelight once again thanks to the visit of the media interview team of “Voice of Shaanxi, Via Which We Communicate with the World”.

Fengxiang’s clay sculpting and woodblock printing belong to the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage protection projects that are highly reputed at home and abroad. Fengxiang’s clay sculptures are one of the four major clay sculptures in the Chinese folk culture. They are famous for powerful and lovely shapes, bright colors, smooth lines, and romantic and magical ornaments. These sculptures have been praised by UNESCO as “Best Gift for Kids”. Meanwhile, Fengxiang’s woodblock paintings are one of the eight major woodblock paintings in China. All the woodblocks are engraved by hand, painted using an indigenous technique, and dyed with hand-painted details. The paintings made from these woodblocks are characterized by a simple and natural style, plump shape, and strong color contrast, with distinctive western China loess characteristics and regional artistic features.

Moreover, Fengxiang’s clay sculptures have been featured on Chinese zodiac stamps many times. The fame of Fengxiang’s clay sculpting reached a new high especially after Fengxiang’s clay rooster with phoenix tail became the mascot of the 2017 CCTV Spring Festival Gala. Since the Spring Festival this year, more than 200,000 tourists have visited Liuying Village to buy clay sculptures.
