2018 EU-China Tourism Year Closed in Xi’an Fuels EU-China Relations

On Nov. 17, 2018, the closing ceremony of 2018 EU-China Tourism Year was held in Xi’an, Shanxi. In his speech, the vice-governor of Shanxi Province Zhao Gang praised the event for a window into Shanxi and of opportunity for cooperation between Shanxi and EU or other part of the world. Under The Belt and Road initiative, Shanxi continues to promote its exchange and cooperation with all EU countries in the field of tourism. 

At this high-profile gathering, Shanxi sparkled as home to various tourism resources so that more foreign tourists fell in love with it. According to statistics, up to 1.97 billion tourists, both domestic and foreign, traveled around Shanxi during 2013 – 2017.

In 2017, Shanxi witnessed 762,700 tourists from Europe, accounting for 20 percent of those from the world, an increase by 18.44% on a year-on-year basis. 

During the first three quarters, it witnessed 523,542,100 tourists both domestic and foreign, which included 2,985,000 tourists from the world. 

The Department of Culture and Tourism plans to build Shanxi into a Shanxi-flavored destination of both Chinese characteristics and international style and a leading international tourism center.
