Public sacrifice ceremony of Emperor Xuanyuan during Qingming Festival in Wuxu year (2018) will be held on April 5

The “Public Sacrifice Ceremony of Emperor Xuanyuan during Qingming Festival in Wuxu Year” will be held on April 5 (Qingming Festival) at the Qiaoshan Sacrifice Square in Huangling County, Shaanxi Province.

The Mausoleum of the Yellow Emperor is located on the top of Qiaoshan Mountain in Huangling County, Shaanxi Province. It has been recognized as the tomb of Yellow Emperor (Xuanyuan), the humanistic ancestor of the Chinese nation since the Western Han Dynasty. In 1961, the State Council announced that it was listed in the first batch of national key cultural relics protection units as the “First Ancient Tomb”. It is a national sacred place honored and admired by Chinese at home and abroad.

During the Ming and Qing dynasties, sacrificing the Yellow Emperor on Qiaoshan Mountain was considered a political system of the country. In 1935, the government of the Republic of China designated the Qingming Festival as a “national tomb-sweeping festival”. During the Qingming Festival in 1937, the two parties of the Kuomintang and Communist Party of China jointly sacrificed the Yellow Emperor at his mausoleum, and Comrade Mao Zedong personally wrote a memorial address for the sacrifice ceremony.

After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Shaanxi followed the historical tradition to hold the public sacrifice ceremony for the Yellow Emperor at his mausoleum on every Qingming Festival, which has become an appealing national festival with extensive influence.

In recent years, each year, as many as more than a million Chinese at home and abroad and international friends visit the Mausoleum of the Yellow Emperor each year to sacrifice for the nation's ancestor or have a tour.
